Meet Deon Gordon

For Deon Gordon, the journey into respiratory therapy began with a moment of compassion. One day, while riding the GRTC bus, she encountered a man coughing uncontrollably, visibly struggling to breathe. Concerned, Deon asked if he was okay, and the man explained that he had COPD. At the time, Deon was unfamiliar with the condition, but she felt a strong desire to help. This brief yet impactful interaction led her to research healthcare careers, eventually discovering the field of respiratory therapy. The more she learned, the more she was drawn to this rewarding profession. Today, she is thriving in a field that aligns with her passion for helping others.

Deon Gordon, Respiratory Therapy student at Reynolds Community CollegeOvercoming Challenges as an International Student

As an international student, Deon faced significant challenges in her pursuit of higher education. Without an academic background in the U.S., she struggled to find colleges that would accept her foreign high school diploma. Financial difficulties added another layer of stress, making the dream of college seem almost unattainable. However, unlike other institutions, Reynolds accepted her credentials and provided grants and scholarships, ensuring that financial barriers would not stand in the way of her education.

A Supportive Community at Reynolds

From the very start, Deon received unwavering support from the Reynolds community. Academic advisors guided her through the process of class registration, FAFSA applications, and financial aid opportunities. The encouragement extended beyond administrative support. Felicia Green, a testing specialist at the Testing Center, became a source of motivation for Deon. Each time she arrived for an exam, she offered words of encouragement, a small gesture that significantly boosted her confidence. These moments of kindness have played a vital role in her academic journey, reinforcing her determination to succeed.

One of the most memorable experiences in Deon’s clinical rotations happened recently. Near the end of her shift, a patient went into cardiac arrest. Deon had the opportunity to manually resuscitate the patient, an intense and emotional experience. Despite having a test scheduled at the Testing Center shortly after, her focus remained solely on the patient’s survival. Unfortunately, despite the team’s best efforts, the patient did not make it. When she arrived at the Testing Center visibly shaken, Ms. Green noticed her distress and asked if she was okay. After she shared her experience, Ms. Green reassured her that she was meant for this profession, offering her a moment to collect herself before beginning her test. That compassionate exchange reinforced her resolve to continue in the field, no matter how difficult the journey became.

For Deon, the most rewarding part of being a respiratory therapy student is the impact she can have on patients, even as a student. She recalls a touching moment when a patient expressed gratitude for her care, calling her an angel and encouraging her never to give up. Moments like these make the challenges worthwhile and strengthen her desire to continue on this path.

Advice for Future International Students

Her advice to other international students considering a career in respiratory therapy is simple: “The only thing standing between you and your dream is fear. Once you get over that wall of fear, you’ll realize it’s not that bad.” She understands the apprehension that comes with taking the first step, but she assures aspiring students that opportunities and support systems exist to help them succeed.

Reynolds has played a crucial role in Deon’s success. The program's hybrid format allows her to balance work and studies while gaining hands-on experience in hospitals around Richmond. Through clinical rotations, she has built relationships with experienced respiratory therapists who provide invaluable advice and mentorship. Her professors are always available to answer questions and offer constructive feedback, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their careers.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future in Respiratory Therapy

Looking ahead, Deon has set ambitious goals for herself. Once she earns her degree, she hopes to specialize as a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit (NICU/PICU) respiratory therapist in a local hospital. Inspired by the neonatal specialists she has met through her program, she has developed a deep passion for this field. Eventually, she plans to transition into travel respiratory therapy and further her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in respiratory care.

Deon’s journey is a testament to compassion and the transformative power of education. From an uncertain beginning as an international student to a dedicated future respiratory therapist, she embodies the spirit of perseverance. Her story serves as an inspiration to others, proving that with determination and the right support, anything is possible.
